Harry from Crooked Timber has an interesting article on the site on Michael Foot. He has been reading Kenneth Morgan's biography and this has alerted him to some facts that he was formerly not so aware of. In his oppositional early political career, Foot does seem to have been too close to Beaverbrook - a man who should be an anathema to anyone on the Left. He also was too keen to ally with Enoch Powell on the EEC and the House of Lords issues.
These factors make Harry think less of Michael Foot. However, Foot redeems himself later on by being a hard-working minister in the 1970s and, perhaps, playing a constructive role in the governments of that time.
