It seems Australia has a new Governor-General . It seems that she, just like the prime minister Kevin Rudd, is a republican. So, in what no doubt must be a quite unusual situation, she is the representative of an institution that she disagrees with.
I think the Rudd government will hold another referendum on the monarchy issue at some point. However, this time the republican side need to be shrewder and to give people the chance to vote on the principle of a republic rather than being outwitted by the monarchists as they were last time. The republicans got too tied down with a specific model of a republic and so lost some support as a result. They need to learn from that lesson.
